In his January 19, 2012 Directive, Governor McDonnell established the group to provide a scientific policy analysis to help assess whether the moratorium on uranium mining in the Commonwealth should be lifted, and if so, how best to do so. The Directive sets out eighteen tasks for the UWG to complete, including the creation of a draft statutory and conceptual regulatory framework which the UWG will present in the series of public meetings listed below. The UWG will provide its findings and final report to the Governor and in turn the Uranium Mining Subcommittee of the Coal and Energy Commission. The Virginia Department of Health will hold a public meeting on issues related to potential uranium mining and milling in Virginia. The agenda will include:
1. Presentation by VDH summarizing the comments and questions received to date by VDH regarding private wells and recreational water issues related to uranium mining and milling.
2. Presentation by DEQ on ground water, surface water and air quality issues related to uranium mining and milling.
3. Opportunity for public comments.
The meeting is open to the public and pre-registration is not required.
